"Mommy, who’s that?"

Little Lexi curiously tugged on her mom’s hand as they walked down the street toward their home, her eyes fixed on the blond child that had hopped out of the car that was parked in the driveway of the house next to hers.

"I don’t know Lexi. Maybe they’ll stay and be our new neighbors!" her mother said with a smile, happy to see her daughter excited after the treacherous weeks past.

"Oh mommy! Wouldn’t that be lovely?" Lexi exclaimed, making sure to annunciate the newly learned word that she heard one of her mom’s friends say.

Lexi skipped alongside her mother as they held hands, the same way they did on their walks around the small neighborhood since the time she could walk. She held her mother’s hand with one of her own and swished her favorite blue sundress alongside her with her other, happy that she could be with her mommy. Her light brown curls bounced softly against her back as she walked happily with her head held high, her love of life evident. She smiled as the sun trickled through the treetops and scattered on the sidewalk ahead of them. As they neared the house next to theirs that had been for sale for as long as she could remember, she calmed to a leisurely walk, but kept the toothy grin on her face. When they walked past the ‘For Sale’ sign of the vacant house, Lexi looked up at her mom with curiosity beaming in her eyes.

"Momma, how come no one ever moved into that house before?" she asked softly, as if someone would hear, even though there was no one else in sight.

"I don’t know honey," her mom answered, wondering the same exact thing.

"Maybe there’s ghostes’s," Lexi said in her little 5 year old dialect with a funny look as she began skipping again.

"Maybe everyone just knew that it was meant for someone else to live there," her mother replied with a smile as they walked across their long fresh cut front lawn.

"Mommy, can we go say hi?" Lexi asked with pleading eyes. "Please?!"

"Maybe after a little while," her mother said with a small chuckle at how excited her daughter was about the mysterious people next door.

Lexi followed her mom in the front door of their house, but instead of following her further through the living room and into the kitchen, she climbed up onto the couch that sat under the window. She leaned on the back of the couch and stared out the window, hoping to see another glimpse of the people that were at the neighboring house, as she rested her elbows on the window pane. She stayed that way for a while, almost giving up, until she saw the blond child walk towards the car, followed by a man, woman, and another child, this one a boy a little older than the first with darker hair. The first child, who she saw was also a boy, walked around to the side of the car that was closest to her house and opened the back door of the car, getting in before the man and woman got in the front. She watched as the boy smiled at the man and woman, whom Lexi had already decided were his parents. He laughed with the other boy, his smile lighting up his face with its presence.

"Mommy," Lexi called to her mother as if she was in the same room. Her mother was in the kitchen fixing them both sandwiches for a light lunch, but stopped momentarily to stand in the doorway long enough to listen to her daughter. "How come Daddy had to go away?" she asked, turning to look up at her mom with a questioning glance.
